Central Kachin IDP Installation 1
On November 17, 2024, Atutu installed a mobile microgrid to power an emergency shelter for 257 internally displaced persons in central Kachin.
Four community buildings house the 44 families, and the shelters had previously only received 40 hours of electricity from the national electric grid on a weekly basis.
The shelter has been running for roughly a year on the strained resources.
The community has expressed excitement over the installation of the microgrid, seeing it as an opportunity to expand on welfare programs and community engagement events.
They envision physical activities, sport events, and personal development seminars for the youths.
Humanitarian aid is also expanded with electricity access, allowing for the shelter to host organizations that can help residents.
Overall quality of life and the living conditions have improved for the families who reside at the shelter.
We are now be able to support the shelter with
-
Promote Respiratory Health
To mitigate dust inhalation from the nearby road, they use a water pump to spray the surrounding ground, creating a barrier against dust dispersion and improving breathing conditions for camp residents.
-
Administrative Support
Camp officials/administrative teams utilize office computers and printers for daily operations. -
Communication & Info Dissemination
A loud speaker and sound system are employed for making announcements and notifications across the 6-acre camp site.
-
Community Cohesion
Electricity is used to power an electric organ/keyboard during prayer services and social gatherings.
Our work directly contributes to community resilience by promoting energy independence.
The national grid capacity significantly reduced shortly after installation, limiting them to 12-20 hours of energy access and resulting in energy shortages for residents in this neighborhood.
However, with our system working independently of the grid, the shelter kept its lights on throughout the electricity shortage.
We partnered with SmartAID and FootPrint Project to successfully accomplish this project.
Footprint Project’s mission is to provide cleaner energy for communities in crisis.
SmartAID serves as a vital link between technology and aid efforts around the world.
The mission alignment brought our organizations together in responding to the displacement crisis in Myanmar with technology solutions.
