2024 Northern Kachin Residential Installation

In the early spring of 2024 we were able to install 49 solar home systems as part of our Energy Frontiers Program that focuses on bringing solar energy to off-grid residential communities. These communities are impacted by ongoing armed conflict in the region and have no means of electricity in their villages. Our solar home systems allow for lighting and small device charging and with these installations across four villages in the region, these communities now have access to energy.

The villages are isolated due to road closures and military checkpoints, making their isolation from urban conveniences even more dire. With no access to the national grid, communities go dark once the sun sets for the evening.

With the home solar systems, there is now light in the evening allowing for chores such as gardening and harvesting into the night instead of hastily working in sunlight. Lighting at home also provides an immense sense of security and pride for families, being the only source of light for miles on end in the darkness.

There is dignity in being illuminated against the dark landscape and being able to provide protection and guidance for their families.

The solar home systems also afford the charging of small devices that help families communicate with each other and gain information from beyond the village. Though there are still external factors at hand, these communities have one less concern and peace of mind at night to spend time on their own terms.
